Family Fellowship

Gloria Lee

Family Fellowship was started around 1983 by a group of young professionals.  All were born again Christians with similar background and spoke the same dialect since all came from Hong Kong.  At that time, there was no young adult Cantonese fellowship at CGBC.  Guided by the Holy Spirit, we saw the need to open up our homes for fellowship. Our group consisted of 6-7 young couples, meeting every Friday in alternating members’ homes, studying couples’ communication, Bible characters, and living out Christian principles at the workplace.

After several years, due to our growing children’s extracurricular activities and busy schedule, our meetings were changed to every other Friday with alternate Friday meeting in small groups.  Our focus also changed to befriending seekers, mentoring new believers, fellowshipping and praying for one another, and caring ministry.  Since the group had grown in numbers, we requested a classroom to meet at church.

Though we have different experiences and difficulties in life, we were very willing to share them openly with one another. We even shared our ups and downs in our marriage life, the challenges of rearing children, and lessons in serving God at church and in other areas as well as experiences we learned from short-term mission trips.  We were like a big family in His Kingdom, helping, encouraging and supporting one another.  After all these years, this fellowship has become part of our daily life.  We all work with one accord, serving one another with our gifts without reservation.

God is very faithful to us and His promise never goes in vain.  We are tremendously thankful for all of God’s blessings in our lives.  From young adults, we have grown to become grandparents.  God’s Word has been the source of wisdom and the light for our paths, the root of our lives, and the fountain of joy.

Our Fellowship welcomes seekers, new believers, as well as long time followers of Christ.  We aim to grow in His Word, to witness for Christ, and to live to please God.

In their own words:

“As a member of this Bible study group for a long time, I find that I could be open and share my happiness and sorrows, my sadness and troubles with the brothers and sisters in the Lord.  We  find comfort and trust from each other and try to improve so that we can please God and apply such improvement to our daily life.  We learn from each other and try to hold each other accountable to be a better Christian.” (Anna)

“Having been a participant for 30 years, I can say that the fellowship has helped my personal and spiritual growth.  My brothers and sisters have held me accountable for my actions, provided guidance and encouragement.  They are ready to give a listening ear to my struggles.  They share their experiences so we can all grow to be better Christians.  Our biweekly Bible studies have helped us in having a better knowledge and understanding of our Lord and Savior.” (Wai)

“For those of us who take turns facilitating the Bible studies, we have the opportunities to dwell on God’s Word in a more thought-provoking way while preparing for the discussions.  We also practice the discipline of inductive Bible study, and pray and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. ” (Ruby)

Our Mission Statement

The focus of the Family Fellowship is to provide fellowship, to have personal interaction with God’s Word, and to establish a commitment to application and outreach. We believe in:

Creating an atmosphere of love and acceptance in order to stimulate sharing of personal discoveries, experiences, questions, and problems or needs.

Gaining exposure to others’ ideas in order to stimulate actions, thoughts and discussions among members.

Encouraging the outworking of our faith through service in our local body and community.

Providing encouragement to do personal Bible study on a regular basis.

Praying together and for one another.

Establishing and implementing a vision to bear witness (locally among family and friends, at work, school, and in our neighborhood, as well as globally) to the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ.
