Discipleship Training (DT) and Me

Philip and Jennifer Kuo

Discipleship Training is to follow the model that Jesus laid out. Jesus lived with His disciples for three and half years. In this “small group” environment, the disciples witnessed the Word in the flesh and the close relationship of the Trinity. Because of this intimate relationship with Jesus, the disciples were able to mature in their spiritual lives. The purpose of Discipleship Training is to have an intimate relationship with Jesus in a small group environment and grow together into maturity.

Nowadays, it is almost infeasible to have believers live together in one location like the Early Church. Thus, modern day Discipleship Training will be conducted by frequent small group gatherings with a purpose of having a deeper understanding about God and individuals’ spiritual lives through honest and open sharing among group members.

We are blessed to have Pastor Tim and Linda who started Discipleship Training in our church in 2013. In these two years, brothers and sisters in Discipleship Training have rooted their lives in the Word of God.

It requires a commitment to begin and complete the full course of Discipleship Training. We are always encouraged by a testimony shared with us when we attended SaRang Church’s Discipleship Training. A brother lost his teeth during a car accident in the morning of the day of his Discipleship Training. He still attended the Discipleship Training that evening regardless of the physical impairment.

A similar incident also happened to us. On the morning of our Discipleship Training, Philip woke up and found one of his eyes swollen and surrounded with rashes. After his examination, the doctor told Philip that he had shingles. Because of the testimony we heard at SaRang church, Philip was determined to attend the Discipleship Training that same night. We should not be overcome by physical weakness because our God is almighty and victorious.

The full course of Discipleship Training lasts for three years following the model that Jesus laid out. After three years, the brothers and sisters who completed the Discipleship Training are expected to lead another group of brothers and sisters to start a new cycle of Discipleship Training. We sincerely hope more brothers and sisters in our church will be willing to commit themselves in Discipleship Training and will devote their lives to our living God.
