Worship happens sacrificially, as both burnt offerings and fellowship offerings are presented (vs. 1-2) under David’s direction. Now, much can be said about both types of offerings. To put it simply, however, the offerings are genuinely and freely given to honor the LORD God Almighty. Secondly, Worship continues generously (vs.2-3). Following the offering, David gives a loaf of bread, a cake of dates, and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. That’s a lot of dough! Worshipping extravagantly inspires us to give generously. Thirdly, (vs.4-6) Worship is conducted regularly. Certain Levites were appointed to minister before the Ark of the LORD to give God praise and thanksgiving. And the music team is assembled and encouraged to play on a regularly basis. They strum, they toot their horns, they keep the beat to continually worship the LORD God Almighty.
Usually, following Sunday Service, we tend to think about feeding our children or filling our own tummies. There’s nothing wrong with that. But did you notice how worship affects David in this scriptural account? It inspires him to look beyond himself to distribute blessings to others. He worships the LORD and gives cakes to everybody. How does worship make a difference in our lives? Do we worship sacrificially, generously, and regularly? And as we worship, are we compelled to bless others by acting in kindness, giving generously, and extending grace? You can worship and have your cake too. To God be the glory.
Bring your worship this Sunday! Have your worship on every day!
Flashback Moment: Back in the day, on the mission field, when my colleague was presented with a decadent dessert, his response, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the chocolate cake.”
”1They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. 2After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. 3Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. 4He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to extol, thank, and praise the LORD, the God of Israel: 5Asaph was the chief, and next to him in rank were Zechariah, then Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, 6and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.” (1 Chronicles 16:1-6)
